Issue #6/2009

We at Artarmon Sign-A-Rama strive to bring you value and innovation and in this months newsletter we are focusing on the up-coming holiday season. These are difficult days, market up market down and we get dizzy just thinking about it. Do you need to do something extra to boost sales? We have listed

below some ideas that will help you to drive up sales.

Banners:A great low cost way to promote special events, sales, parties and just about anything.

Digital Print posters: Large format posters(A0- 1149mm x841mm and A1- 841mm x 594mm) provide a quality image of any product or service. Put them on the walls or in the window. Get the posters laminated for protection against scratchs.

Window Graphics:
If you have a store think about holiday decoration but also use this opportunity and add some short term signage highlighting holiday specials and promotions.

Vehicles:You don't need to spend a lot on a full wrap but consider some magnets or vehicle graphics that really work and provide added visibility.

Site Signage:By site signage I mean any sign that is placed at a location where you may be doing work. This is not limited to construction. You could be doing some painting, landscaping, home cleaning, carpet cleaning and so many other things. Having a sign at the location gives the neighbours a ready source for a referral if they need a similar service. You will be surprised at how effective a small sign placed on the property can be.

A Frames:Can be used outside a store or as site sign and really great for promoting your business. This one we did just last week for an insurance broker who will give you great rates.

Interior:Great stores use signage creatively to build the brand and to promote products, they also use signage for directional and to help customers find products.

Finally as always quantity discounts are available just e-mail or call for more

information on any of the above products or any signage needs you may have.

Types of Fonts in Signage

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Lettering has taken a giant step forward. Lettering can provide a platform for differentiation.

Due to the increase in population, many businesses have started that provide the same services. This has created a highly competitive environment. Hence, many different ideas have to be used to distinguish one business from another of a similar type. Commercial Signage plays an active role in achieving this goal. Different sign boards are designed with different lettering to distinguish one business from another and create an impression on the minds of people. There are many different fonts to choose from for use on sign boards.

All fonts give the reader a certain feeling. Your customers may not consciously notice the font. But they will be subconsciously influenced by the style, delivery and personality of your sign. You should think of fonts as a theme representing you and/or your business.

Fonts can be broadly characterized in two areas –

          Friendly, warm and casual

            Formal, serious and traditional

Some fonts can manage to be both formal and casual, depending on how they are used. Some fonts do not work……

Script style fonts can be difficult, if not impossible to read from a distance. Here are some other common examples of fonts with poor legibility. Only use these fonts when you need to convey a message a certain way.

Brush ScripyMT,    Old English TextMT       Mistral

In an attempt to stand out in the crowd, inappropriate fonts have been used for signage. “Designer Fonts” may look good on business cards and stationary, but they can greatly diminish the effectiveness of a sign.

Consider some rules about fonts:- Read More

1. Don’t use more than two different letter styles in a single sign design. Otherwise, you risk creating a mish mash of fonts and reducing the effectiveness of your message.

2. Make your primary message stand out. And it doesn’t always have to be the name of your business that stands out the most. It depends on what you want your sign to do for you. It could be your by line.

3. Get a second opinion. A fresh pair of eyes can offer a different perspective. Whether it’s the graphic designer you’re working with or a friend, ask them for their point of view. And then decide what you want. After all, it’s your sign!

An accountancy firm doesn’t want something that looks like a kindy. And a kindy wants to look fun and exciting, not serious and silent.

Here are some fonts for consideration.

Professional• – people tend to think of lawyers, doctors and businesses along those lines when they hear the word professional

Book Antiqua,     Cooper Black,    Palintino Linotype

Conservative• – Steeped in tradition, tend to have traditional values, “straight laced”

Sans Serif,    Tahoma,   Verdana

Classic • – Formal refined and restrained

ARIAL, ,    Times New Roman,   Century Gothic

Retro• – a look distinctive to a time period

Bauhaus,   Showcard Gothic,   Baskerville Old Face

Whimsical • – full of fun, doesn’t take things too seriously

Broadway,  Jokerman,   Chiller,

Kidsy• – the look and feel of childhood, bright colors and childlike print

RAVIE,       Comic Sans,

This is a small selection of fonts. Using the right font can make the difference in how your sign is viewed. Each font has its own feel and choosing the right one is important.

Bear in mind that if you have chosen a designer font, you will need to supply us with a copy as we don’t have all the fonts available.

  Why Businesses Need Signs ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Many business owners ask us questions about signage, from the very complex to the basics. We are in the unique position of being able to answer, with expertise as we have the backing of the worlds largest sign franchise. One of the most common questions is .....

“Why does my business need a sign?”

It’s a great question, as the answer will  lead a business owner through a series of questions and answers that will help them determine not just whether they need a sign, but just how much signage they really need. This is where we can assist by offering a signage solution that meets the business owners requirements.

Here are three key elements to consider:

1. Visibility = More & Happier Customers – The key reason for signage is to make your business location visible to your customers. If your business isn’t easily or readily located, you are probably losing business which you can’t even quantify. These frustrated and lost buyers will quickly move along to a more visible competitor.

2. What’s Your Message? – Have you thought about what message are you sending out to your

potential customers by NOT having a sign? If you don’t give them something to identify your

business, they may make some assumptions of their own. What could no sign mean? Fly-bynight?

So new to the business, can’t afford a sign?

3. Don’t Miss Your Chance! - Your sign could be your opportunity to make a first impression – and we all know a first impression is powerful. A good sign will convey a sense of what is inside the business, whether it is a technology business, a day spa, a pet store, or a very fine Italian restaurant. A good sign doesn’t have to be expensive. To be effective, it should encourage someone to come in and learn more. Don’t miss out on this chance to win over your next customer!

If you are considering whether or not to add or improve signage at your business, we encourage you to learn more about VISIBILITY, MESSAGE, and the chance to make a good FIRST IMPRESSION! Give Tony or Kris a call onn 94371612.

Is Your Storefront Leaving the Right Impression with Your Customers?

Take the "Visit Your Sign" Challenge!

In tough times it is the businesses who are seen and heard that survive and prosper .

Summer is not here yet but it will be soon and it brings with it longer daylight hours and increased foot traffic along sidewalks and by storefronts. With that in mind, we challenge you to walk outside of your business, take several steps back and take a close look. Are you presenting the best image of your business to prospective clients?

How does your façade look? Is it painted, clean, presentable?

How about the entry? Is it well marked? Welcoming?

Most importantly, what about your signs? For many of us, we buy a sign when we open our new business carefully examining it when it is brand new. We proudly watch as it is installed and admire our image out there for the world to see. But, after a while as our business picks up and our focus changes, we have forgotten about the sign and haven't examined it closely since that first day although we pass by it daily.

We are sending out a challenge to you. Walk out to your sign and look at what your clients are seeing. Are they seeing your business as you do? As a welcoming place to get the best deals on your particular product and/or services.

click here for a checklist of questions to ask yourself about your business signage when completing this

challenge

Here’s a checklist to use while completing this challenge:

Is it faded or peeling?

Is the hardware rusted or falling apart?

Does it contain outdated info?

Does your sign reflect what is really going on inside?

Does it say the right things about your business?

Imagine what someone who has never used your business might think when they see it. If

you’re not seeing what you want your customers to see, give Sign-A-Rama Artarmon a call.

We make onsite house calls and will talk about options or ideas for rehabbing your sign or
